Decisions 7 and 8 on Kakobuy: the shipping line and the insurance on it

The line decides price, speed and what may travel. Insurance defines eligible claims and exclusions. Check both choices before submitting the parcel.

Default vs switch

Decision 7: which shipping line

07

Which line

Default
No recommended default. Choose an eligible line after checking its rules.
Switching costs
Several dollars per kilo between lines, plus minimum weights and goods restrictions.
Worth switching when
You ship batteries, liquids or perfume, need speed, or sit near a weight step.

Kakobuy's public estimator asks for destination, weight, goods type and box size, then lists every line with a price, a transit range and notes. On October 10, 2026 a 1000 g parcel of ordinary goods showed 13 lines to the US, 16 to the UK and 18 to Germany.

Run it with your real packed weight and box size, not a guess. The ranking changes with weight, and some lines do not appear at all for light parcels.

Reading the estimator: price, transit and the line's rules

The cheapest US line that day was a cosmetics line that accepts batteries and liquids, at $38.07 and 11 to 17 days. Lines at 7 to 13 days cost a dollar or four more. The fast HK UPS line cost $49.79 for 2 to 6 days.

Read each line's notes before choosing. Names carry rules: "Batteries and Perfume Not Allowed" means what it says, and "electrified" lines exist precisely for the earbuds and watches that other lines refuse. Tax-free-labelled lines have specific tax-handling and eligibility conditions. Read those conditions and the recipient’s responsibilities before choosing, which is decision 9.

Volume weight: the four divisors

Light but bulky parcels are charged on volume. Kakobuy's formula is length times width times height in centimetres, divided by 5000, 6000, 7000 or 8000 depending on the carrier, and the larger of volume weight and actual weight is charged. A 40 x 30 x 15 cm box is 3.6 kg at 5000 but 2.25 kg at 8000. The same box can cost very different amounts on two lines that look similarly priced per kilo.

This is where decisions 6 and 7 meet. Removing shoe boxes during pre-packing shrinks the box, and on a /5000 line that can be worth more than the ¥18 pre-pack fee. The switchboard shows the chargeable weight at whichever divisor you pick.

Minimum weights: cheap lines a first parcel cannot use

Some of the best-priced lines refuse light parcels. On the US list, two UPS duty-free lines quoted around $39 for 2 to 6 days, but were greyed out with the note that the parcel weight should not be less than 2000 g. In the UK, HKUPS needs at least 2501 g, and UK Line-B for heavy parcels starts at 5001 g.

Two light items may not reach those floors; use their packed weight rather than the item count. That is one reason decision 5 matters: combining items may make another line eligible, but the higher weight or volume can also increase its total cost.

Default vs switch

Decision 8: insure the parcel or not

08

Insurance

Default
Off. Without it, Kakobuy is not responsible for losses by third-party carriers.
Switching costs
A premium shown when you submit the parcel; it is not published as a rate.
Worth switching when
The goods are worth more than the freight, the line is slow, or customs in your country is strict.

The October 10 policy describes optional insurance at parcel submission, with eligible delay, customs and loss or damage events. Its delay example uses a 30- or 40-day threshold depending on the line and 20% of freight compensation. The selected line’s criteria, exclusions and claim evidence determine whether payment is due.

What the insurance will not pay, and what happens without it

The ceiling is the actual shipping fee plus the actual value of the goods, up to the insured amount, and any delay compensation already paid is deducted from a later loss claim. The exclusions are specific: delays from weather, epidemics or conflict; delays caused by customs inspections or by the recipient not clearing or paying tax; losses caused by the recipient; parcels returned or destroyed because nobody collected them.

Without insurance, Kakobuy's compensation article says it is not responsible for loss or damage by third-party logistics, and lists further exclusions: customs confiscation, a wrong address, fragile items in transit, parcels tracked as delivered. Compare the premium with the covered loss, exclusions and your ability to absorb the loss. A low-value parcel or fast route alone does not settle whether cover is useful.

Put it into practice

Compare like-for-like quotes

  1. Use the same destination, packed weight, dimensions and contents for every line. Read minimum and maximum sizes before comparing the headline price.
  2. Identify whether the line uses actual or volumetric weight, how it rounds weight steps, and whether the quoted tax treatment applies to your shipment.
  3. For cover, read eligible loss events, exclusions, deadlines and evidence requirements. Record the policy shown at submission; the premium is not a promise that every loss is paid.

The lowest quote disappears when the parcel is ready

First compare the inputs: destination, goods type, actual packed weight and dimensions. Then read the unavailable line’s reason. A minimum weight, restricted item or oversized box is an eligibility issue; a different quoted amount is a pricing issue. Removing an item or its packaging changes the parcel, so recalculate rather than carrying over the old price.

If no line accepts the full contents, ask which item or condition prevents submission. Do not silently relabel a battery or liquid as ordinary goods. Compare an allowed alternative with the cost and timing of any eligible seller return, and read the insurance terms for the line you finally select.
